H.W. Bentinck

De naam Bentinck Tuinenendagen is gekozen omdat de voormalige eigenaar van het Kasteel van Rhoon, Hans Willem Bentinck (1649-1709), van zeer groot belang is geweest voor de aanleg van vele prachtige tuinen in Engeland en in Nederland.

In de 17de eeuw bezaten Koning Stadhouder Willem III en koningin Mary enkele buitenplaatsen maar zochten een geschikte locatie voor een nieuw te bouwen paleis om daarbij een imposante tuin aan te leggen. Zij kochten hiervoor “t Huys op ’t Loo. Willem schreef in 1698 aan zijn vriend Hans Willem Bentinck: “de jacht en de tuinkunst zijn mijn twee grote passies”. Een belangrijke inspiratiebron waren de barokke tuinen bij Versailles die de Franse Lodewijk XIV had laten aanleggen. Voor het ontwerp van het nieuw te bouwen paleis en bijbehorende werd eengroep vakontwerpers en architecten samengesteld en zijn stonden onder leiding van Hans Willem Bentinck
